This all adds up to a palate that is distinctly Jack and makes it surprisingly fun to drink. Forgoing much of the sweetness found in its palate, the finish is oaky, slightly bitter, and at times almost briney. It’s a strong contrast to the sweet nose and palate, and leaves a mildly dry and tongue zapping funkiness that’s a hard contrast to the other parts of this whiskey.

Besides the brand’s quintessential banana notes, it offers a sweet and fruit-forward palate that makes it stand out and constantly reminds you you’re drinking Jack.
When I compared it to a Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof flavor profile, I surprisingly found more nuance with the standard’s profile. Yes it was a single barrel and barrels can vary, but the result wasn’t what I was expecting and shows the standard Jack Daniel’s does have its moments.
The standard Jack Daniel’s has always been known as a budget whiskey. That of course comes with an assumption that it’s a subpar whiskey that college kids drink because they don’t know or can’t afford any better, and with its reputation as a staple mixer with Coca-Cola. Along with brands like Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark, which can be found in just about any bar in America, it further adds to people’s assumption that these brands aren’t worth your time and money.
On the flip side, the brand also has its passionate, and at times, rabid fanbase. It would seem odd for a whiskey to have such a following if it was in fact a swill whiskey. Much like I found when I reviewed Maker’s Mark, unfounded reputations certain brands carry aren’t always true.
Jack Daniel’s is a superb value for the whiskey in its bottle. While I didn’t find that to be true with Jim Beam White Label, Jack Daniel’s can be a decent sipping whiskey despite its low proof and downer finish. A flavorful and enjoyable yet flawed budget whiskey, that’s unmistakably Jack. Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey may have its cynics, but it holds up well against some of the best of the budget sub-$30 whiskeys like Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon and Elijah Craig Small Batch,
Taken as a sipping whiskey, it has an above-average nose, a likeable banana and sugary vanilla palate, but comes up short with a flawed finish. Despite being 80 proof, it thankfully drinks a bit hotter, but Brown-Forman would be well served to increase to at least 90 proof.

“Then you need to get another refrigerator for vermouth,” she retorted. This is probably true. I have a lot of vermouth in my fridge (what can I say, I like to try all the different brands). But, it’s not just vermouth—there are a variety of different alcohols that do best in the fridge. The rule I use is: If it’s under 15% alcohol or if the base is wine, it goes in the fridge once it’s open,

We asked whisky writer Ian Wisniewski – whose book The Whisky Dictionary comes out on September 5th – for his thoughts on a question we get asked a lot by visitors to the Scotch Whisky Experience: should you add water to whisky? “Whisky lovers can be divided into various groups.
Some are committed to malts, others always pour a blend. Some crave peated malts, while others won’t even try. Another dividing line is between those who automatically add water, and those who believe that water can only compromise (or even decimate) the experience. Adding water is often assumed to be the right thing to do, in order to ‘open up’ a whisky.
This familiar advice suggests that adding water promotes a more comprehensive experience. Sounds great. But it’s more accurate to say adding water promotes a different experience. A key influence on the flavour profile of a whisky is the alcoholic strength.
- This is because different flavour compounds change from being soluble to insoluble at particular strengths.
- When a flavour compound is soluble it is ‘dissolved’ within the whisky, and consequently not discernible.
- When a flavour compound becomes insoluble it exists as an independent entity within the whisky, and shows as a flavour.
A higher alcoholic strength typically delivers richer, more concentrated flavours, such as dried fruit and vanilla, compared to a lower strength which promotes lighter notes, such as citrus. Meanwhile, phenolic compounds (smokey, peaty notes) become progressively mellower and diminish as water is added.
With each whisky offering a range of flavour profiles, depending on the degree of dilution, there is only one way to discover where the ideal flavour lies. A fascinating experiment is to initially taste a whisky neat (with higher strength whiskies, the sheer intensity of alcohol can numb the palate and limit a tasting experience).
Nevertheless, this acts as a ‘control’ and point of comparison for dilution, and the quest for the ultimate version. Water should be still spring water, ie. without the discernible characteristics of mineral water which would confuse the experiment. After adding a drop of water, with a pipette offering ultimate control, the whisky can be re-tasted, and then again with two drops of water, and so on.
- This is the convenient version of the experiment.
- A more scientific version is to fill several glasses of the same size and shape, with equal amounts of whisky, and taste the first glass neat, taste the second with one drop of water, the third with two drops, and so on.
- This compares the effect of varying degrees of dilution on the same amount of whisky, but requires far more glassware.
Whether, and how much water delivers the ideal flavour profile, depends of course on personal preference. My experience is that whisky at bottling strength usually reveals a sequence of individual flavours, each having their moment in the spotlight, which I really like.
Adding water often ‘integrates’ the flavours into an evenly balanced package, with the flavours appearing simultaneously (rather than individually). I also find oak notes can become more pronounced, while phenolic character (ie. smoke and peat) diminishes. I love phenolics, but the more supple the oak notes the better.

And while bourbon can be produced anywhere in the United States, it must be made from a minimum of 51 percent corn (among other requirements) in order to be called as such. Jack Daniel’s, a Tennessee whiskey, is owned by the Brown-Forman Corporation.
With 80 percent corn in its mash bill, one could be forgiven for confusing it for a bourbon. The difference lies in how and where it’s made. Produced in Lynchburg, Tenn., Jack Daniel’s uses a method known as charcoal mellowing (a.k.a. the “Lincoln County Process”), in which unaged whiskey is filtered through sugar maple charcoal.

Despite the more procedural process, both bottles sit at an approachable price point – $29.99 for the Bonded and $32.99 for the Triple Mash. Bottles are available in the US as of early May, with international markets rolling out later in the year. With these releases, Jack Daniel’s is swooping into a higher tier of products.

The two-piece collection constituted JD’s first premium line extension in a quarter-century, and the Bonded especially has wasted no time in picking up glowing reviews and new adherents. So why did Whisky Advocate choose this bottle? Basically, it was a perfect storm.
As the list shies away from limited editions and prohibitively expensive whiskeys, the WA folks appreciated that Jack Daniel’s Bonded is both part of a new permanent collection and is priced at around $30. They also like that it’s a true bonded whiskey, fulfilling all of the legal requirements to be labeled as such: it’s produced at one distiller during one distilling season, aged at least four years and bottled at 100 proof.
Finally, they just love how it tastes, noting that it features all of the classic notes of Jack Daniel’s classic Old No.7 but amps up the intensity. While Jack Daniel’s Bonded took the top spot with a score of 97 out of 100 on Whisky Advocate’s scoring system, it’s hardly the only standout whiskey worth mentioning here.
